Bottled Water vs. Home Water Purifier: Which Actually Costs Less?

Bottled Water vs. Home Water Purifier: Which Actually Costs Less?

A 20-litre bottle of water in Nairobi retails for KSh 130 to 180. A household using 100 litres per week spends over KSh 24,000 per year on bottled water, before accounting for the environmental cost of plastic.

The Full Cost of Bottled Water

The direct financial cost of bottled water is easy to underestimate because purchases happen in small increments. But when calculated annually and over five years, the numbers are striking:

Household usage

Weekly cost

5-year cost

50 litres/week (2 bottles)

KSh 15,600

KSh 78,000

100 litres/week (4–5 bottles)

Figures based on retail price of KSh 150 per 20-litre bottle, Nairobi market average, October 2026.

The True Cost of a Home RO Purifier

A home RO purifier has three cost components: installation, filter replacements, and periodic service. Unlike bottled water, the cost per litre falls as volume increases, and the system continues producing purified water 24 hours a day.

Cost Component

Annual Estimate (KSh)

Filter replacement set (pre-filters + post-filter)

3,500–5,000

Annual service call

2,000–4,000

RO membrane (amortised over 3 years)

2,500–4,000

Total annual running cost

8,000–13,000

At 100 litres per week, a home purifier costs roughly KSh 10,000 per year versus KSh 31,200 for bottled water, a saving of over KSh 21,000 annually.

The Environmental Equation

Kenya imports approximately 1.6 billion plastic bottles annually. Less than 10% are recycled; the remainder end up in landfill, waterways and eventually the ocean. Plastic water bottles require 17 million barrels of oil per year to produce globally.

Nairobi's informal waste sector recovers some PET bottles, but ocean plastic surveys consistently find Kenyan-brand bottles in coastal debris studies. A household switching from bottled water to an RO purifier eliminates an estimated 250 single-use bottles per year.

Quality Comparison

Bottled water in Kenya is governed by KEBS KS EAS 12, the same standard as municipal treated water. Testing by Consumer Insight and individual researchers has periodically found samples of Kenyan bottled water exceeding limits for total coliform bacteria, TDS and pH. An RO purifier running on schedule produces water that consistently meets or exceeds bottled water quality at a fraction of the cost.
